Rod Simons is a multi-award winning journalist and media specialist. Currently, Rod is seen on TV and heard on radio and he writes and creates cutting-edge imaging efforts for various businesses while producing a wide range of TV programs for broadcast on local, regional and national stations. Rod most recently served as a lead anchor for KSTP-TV (ABC), joining the Hubbard owned station in October 2003. Prior to moving to Minnesota, Rod anchored the launch of FOX Sports Net's "Regional Sports Report" in the Pacific Northwest and Detroit Regions while also hosting KOMO-AM sports in Seattle. In all, Rod spent 18 years as a lead news and sports anchor at KSTW-TV (CBS/UPN) in Seattle; KOIN-TV (CBS) in Portland, Oregon; KJR-AM in Seattle and KVI-AM in Seattle. Rod's body of work as Sports Director at KSTW included award winning reporting from Rose Bowl's, Seattle Mariners' A.L. playoff runs from 1995-2001 and the Seattle Supersonics' 1996 trip to the NBA Finals against Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. Rod also worked at KIVI (ABC) Boise, Idaho and KVEW-TV (ABC) Tri-Cities.
Right now! Rod’s busy with imaging, promotional and charitable projects that have been longtime goals. Rod is the driving force behind raising thousands of dollars for his favorite charity the Gift of Adoption (501-3-C) at his Golf for the Giftcelebrity tournaments at the Tom Lehman designed Troy Burne Golf Club. Rod and wife Pam adopted their daughter Annie in November 2005. You can see an example of Rod’s production passion in the for-broadcast DVD, “Making of No Place Left To Fall” for Bill Champlin (in world wide release right now). The 2-time Grammy award winning singer is also a front man in the legendary jazz/rock band Chicago and also the founder of Bay Area based Sons of Champlin. Rod created, produces, and hosts the independent TV show Sports Final on KARE-11 (NBC). It’s one of several programs in development and being independently produced by his rodmedia communcations LLC.
Awards:
Rod is an 8-time Emmy award winner and is the recipient of 3 of the past 5-Emmy awards for Outstanding Sports Anchor in the Midwest (Minnesota) region. Rod's "first on the scene" reports with dramatic descriptions from the foot of the Minneapolis I-35W bridge disaster in August 2007 helped lead KSTP to a first place “Headliner” award in 2008. Additionally, Rod won First Place in the Associated Press "Breaking News" category for his on-field coverage of the Minnesota Twins division title in 2006. Rod's also been honored with an International Gabriel Award, two Page One Awards and three gold medal honors from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Education:
Rod graduated from Washington State University with a BA in Communications/History minor. Rod is a 1998 charter inductee in the Pasco (WA) High School Hall of Fame where he was a multi-sport standout as well as Associated Student Body President.
Associations:
Rod currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Midwest chapter (Minnesota) of the Gift of Adoption Fund as well as NACAC (North American Council on Adoptable Children). Rod is also deeply devoted to domestic violence issues, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Humane Society. Rod is a lifelong member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
